The Daily Mile by first4playgrounds
In accordance with the “Daily Mile” a new idea to counter the rising epidemic of obesity in primary school children, we have updated our walk a mile game.
The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running or jogging at their own pace in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes.
We want every child to have the opportunity to do The Daily Mile at primary school, and with the addition of first4playgrounds walk a mile track, the mile a day can be completed efficiently and properly.
The Daily Mile has many benefits for teachers and children. The children run around in the fresh air. There is no setup, tidy or equipment required. There is no extra workload for teachers and no staff training is needed. No kit or changing time is needed as children run in their uniforms. It’s non-competitive and fun! The Children return to class ready to learn, it helps improve fitness and it’s fully inclusive; every child, whatever their circumstances, age or ability, succeeds at The Daily Mile.
Our Walk a Mile is a playground marking track installed around the perimeter of the school grounds designed to work in accordance with the Daily Mile. The perimeter of the playground is measured. Then the correct number of laps amounting to a mile is calculated and clearly installed onto the playground at the start of the track.
The track is then split into ten equally sized sections, with a new colour every tenth.
At first4playgrounds we have 4 styles of walk a mile tracks. A dashed line track, a dotted track, a 2 lane track and a solid line track.
