View ‘Peter’s World’ at Hatcham Temple Grove Free School
Our team made the journey to South London to install several pretty complex graphics, including a World Map, the Solar System Planets and Waldorf Multiplication Circles at Hatcham Temple Grove Free School in Lewisham. The project took a couple of days but the final results were stunning.
Firstly they installed this ‘Peters World Map’.
The ‘Peters World Map’ is an Equal Area cylindrical projection with standard parallels at 45 degrees thus resulting in a distortion of shape which is stretched about the equator and squashed towards the poles, but having the great advantage that all countries are correct in size in relation to each other.
Next the team installed these five ‘Waldorf Multiplication circle’s’.
Waldorf Multiplication Circles are a tool used to create a visual representation of the pattern created when you multiply numbers by the same factor.
Often times you might find them made on paper, with chalk, or on a wood board. They are used in Waldorf and other hands-on trainings, but can be helpful for all ages.
The basic idea is that you start with a 10 point circle and connect the dots around the circle for the last digit of each product of a multiplication problem.
Example: Counting by 3’s would connect these numbers 3,6,9,2,5,8,1,4,7,0 {3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30) you can keep going and children will start to notice that the pattern just repeats itself.
The team then installed this Solar System.
Lastly our team installed this Maths Maze.
The Staff at Hatcham Grove were so thrilled with the final result they sent us this email just after the completion of the markings.
‘A big thank you for the wonderful playground markings and your help and flexibility in executing them. You have been very responsive to the schools needs in terms of installation dates, budget and developing our own designs. Excellent service and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to others. The children are really enjoying playing with the markings and we are looking forward to getting the next phase of the work installed. ‘ Laura Murphy (PTA committee member).
